NEW STUDENTS

What ages do you teach?
Most of my students are in the age range of 6–16, but I also teach adults.

How early can my child start taking lessons?
This really depends on the student: their attention span, their ability to read letters and count, and the ability of the parent to assist with practice. I generally recommend starting piano lessons at age 6.

How do you start lessons with a new student?
Before enrolling a student, I begin with an interview in order to get to know the student and their parents, if applicable. In this interview, I learn about the student’s background in music and piano, their musical goals, and their learning style. This helps us both decide we are a good fit as not every teacher is right for every student.

Do you travel to all areas of San Francisco?
This will depend on the area location, travel time, difficulty of parking, and how it will work my schedule availability. I may not be able to offer in-home lessons in certain situations.


PIANO

Digital piano vs. acoustic piano?
There are many great uses for a digital piano, and there have been many advancements made to the weighted touch and tone. Digital pianos are often cheaper, have the ability to be moved easily, and can have headphones plugged in, thus not disturbing your neighbors. However, in my opinion digital pianos are not adequate replacements for a real piano, even with the latest technology. They simply cannot accurately replicate the tone and touch of an acoustic piano. In my experience, my students with real pianos are the ones who are more committed and interested in lessons, not to mention they won’t have issues with technique. This is why I insist that my students practice on a real piano even from the beginning (in fact, this is when it’s the most important!). If you are worried about the commitment, consider renting a piano.


PAYMENTS

How often do I need to pay?
Tuition for lessons in the Fall and Winter/Spring Sessions is paid for on a monthly basis. Lessons in the Summer Session are flexible and based on demand.

When is tuition due?
Payments must be received by the first lesson of the month, or by the 15th of the month, whichever comes first.

How may I pay for tuition?
You may pay by cash, check (payable to JULIE BARWICK MUSIC), credit card, or PayPal. If mailing a check, please mail to the address found on the studio policies from your registration packet.

When and how do I receive the invoices?
Invoices are sent via email approximately one week before the first lesson of the month.

What is your cancellation policy?
Lessons must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance in order to qualify for a make-up lesson. Exceptions will only be made for illness if the teacher is notified 4 hours before the scheduled lesson time.

What is your make-up lesson policy?
I allow three absences per school year (September 1–May 31), which can be made-up at no charge if 24 hours prior notice is given. Families are expected to pay for additional lessons that are missed due to school concerts, sporting events, travel plans, other activities, etc. Exceptions may be made for illness at the teacher’s discretion.

If I already paid for a lesson, but cancelled with advance notice, can I get a credit for next month?
Tuition payments are non-refundable and no credits may be given. By accepting a place in my studio, you are reserving a time slot in my schedule and committing to pay for the number of lessons being taught in that month. I do allow three absences per school year (September 1–May 31), which can be made-up at no charge if 24 hours prior notice is given.

What about holidays?
Please refer to the current year calendar for the days that I do not teach. I typically follow the San Francisco public school calendar. Those lessons will not be included in tuition, but may be made up if desired by the student (depending on my availability).

What if the teacher cancels the lesson?
Lessons cancelled by the teacher will be made up at a later time.
